Volkswagen offers buyers two high-quality SUVs, but they are very different from each other. On the other hand, if you can afford one of the models, you can probably afford the other. The Volkswagen Atlas 2023 is a mid-size SUV with three rows of standard seating while the Volkswagen Tiguan is a compact five-seat SUV. Since Tiguan is one of the roomiest SUVs in its segment, it can compete with Atlas in terms of versatility.

So, if you're a current Tiguan owner and wondering what to buy, or if you're new to Volkswagen and don't know which SUV is right for you, let's take a closer look at both the Volkswagen Atlas 2023 and the Volkswagen Tiguan 2023.

Price

Of course, the Volkswagen Tiguan 2023 is more affordable than the Atlas 2023. The Tiguan starts at around $36,000 while the Volkswagen Atlas starts at around $45,000. That's a significant difference, but if you lease your next Volkswagen SUV, the difference will be about $200 per month between the two. In other words, the Atlas costs more, but not much more.

Interior space

The Volkswagen Tiguan and the Volkswagen Atlas are among the most spacious SUVs in their respective segments. The Tiguan's total cargo space is between 1,065 liters and 2,081 liters, while the Atlas has 583 liters of cargo space with all seats in place and over 2,700 liters with each row folded flat. There's no question that the Atlas is the more versatile option between the two. It's the roomiest in the front, middle and third rows, while offering more cargo space. You can comfortably seat 7 people in the Atlas with five adults and two children. Everyone will be comfortable. The Tiguan is better for two adults and 3 teenagers or four adults. So if your kids are growing up or are already teenagers and you tend to take long trips with a lot of stuff in the vehicle, the Atlas is probably the best option.

The Atlas is also the best option if you need to tow with your SUV, as it can tow up to 5,000 pounds, much more than the Tiguan. Of course, this means that the Atlas and its 3.6-liter V6 engine is not as fuel efficient as the Tiguan.

So here's the bottom line. If you need room for at least five passengers and all their luggage on a regular basis and you have to tow, get the Atlas. If you're a younger family with small children, don't really need to tow, and want to focus on lowering your purchase and ownership costs, the Tiguan is the better option.
