With five models having received the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick + awards from the IIHS in 2022, Volkswagen is one of the brands offering the safest vehicles on Canadian roads. This is because every VW vehicle is available with a range of impressive safety features, some of which will be described here.
The Travel Assist
Many Volkswagen vehicles can be ordered with the Travel Assist system, which is an advanced combination of the lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control that works on pre-mapped highways. This system makes it possible for the driver to better concentrate on the road ahead since it takes control of the vehicle’s speed and steering, provided that the driver keeps their hand on the steering wheel. When Travel Assist is activated, the vehicle can adjust its speed to follow the car in front or to obey changing speed limit zones. At the same time, the system makes sure to keep the vehicle centred in its lane at all times, even in and after a curve.
The Front Assist
Every new Volkswagen vehicle comes standard with the Front Assist, which is a system that can detect a risk of collision with an object or a pedestrian. When this happens, the driver is notified by a loud warning tone and a visual signal in the instrument panel. If the driver takes no action, the vehicle can apply the brakes on its own in order to prevent the collision or at least reduce its severity.
The 4MOTION all-wheel drive
All of the Volkswagen SUVs and some of the other models can be ordered with the competent 4MOTION all-wheel drive system which improves safety on slippery roads and in general. Being able to send the engine’s power to all four wheels in a controlled manner allows the system to help the driver keep control of the vehicle on slippery surfaces such as snow or ice. By providing an added level of traction, this system also makes it possible to drive in deep snow where other vehicles could get stuck.
