The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R is the ultimate version of the Golf and one of the most dynamic and powerful compact hatchbacks on sale today.
An advanced powertrain
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R is powered by turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine that delivers 315 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque with the 6-speed manual transmission or 295 lb-ft with the 7-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission. The Golf R comes standard with the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system which helps it transfer this power to the road in a more efficient manner, with a minimum of wheel spin. This system also includes a new torque vectoring rear differential that can send up to 100% of the engine’s power to the outside wheel in order to pivot the car around a tight corner by limiting understeer.
A dynamic chassis
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R is not only about straight-line performance since its chassis and suspension systems have been reworked to provide the best level of handling and road feel possible. These changes include making the entire chassis and a number of suspension components lighter and more rigid with the help of high-strength steel in critical areas. The spring rates of the front suspension have also been firmed up by 10%, as was the front anti-roll bar. In order to provide better handling and improved comfort, the 2022 Golf R is equipped with an adaptive damping system that adjusts the firmness of the suspension up to 200 times per second.
An impressive level of practicality
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R is a performance car, but it is also a Golf, which means that it is much more practical than is expected from a car in this category. Indeed, the Golf R benefits from 564 liters of cargo space, which can be expanded to 977 liters by folding the rear seats. This allows the Golf R to be a family’s only vehicle, which is not something that is possible with many sports cars.
