The Technologies that Make the Volkswagen Taos More Efficient

The Volkswagen Taos is a practical and fun to drive subcompact crossover that benefits from the latest technologies in order to be very fuel efficient.

The turbocharged engine

The 2022 Volkswagen Taos comes standard with a new 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Not only does this engine make for a dynamic driving experience, but it is also surprisingly fuel efficient, with consumption figures that are as low as 8.4 L/100 km in the city and 6.6 L/100 km on the highway. To achieve this, the engine is fitted with many technologies, such as the start stop system which works in conjunction with the regenerative braking system. This means that the engine turns off when the vehicle is stopped in order to prevent unnecessary pollution and consumption, but it restarts as soon as the brake pedal is released. The regenerative braking system picks up the energy that is generated when the vehicle slows down and turns it into electricity that is used to charge to power the lights and accessories while the engine is off. This makes it so the gasoline engine and the alternator don’t have to work as hard to keep the battery’s charge constant, which reduces consumption.

The dual-clutch transmission

The 2022 Volkswagen Taos equipped with the available 4Motion all-wheel drive system is also equipped with an advanced 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG) which benefits performances and economy. Indeed, the DSG transmission features two clutches, one that works with the odd-numbered gears and the other which works with the even-numbered gears. This design allows for impressively quick gear changes that make the most out of the engine’s performance. Since the transmission uses clutches, the link between the engine and the wheels is constant, which makes it more efficient than a regular automatic which uses a torque converter that allows slippage to occur.
