2022 Volkswagen Taos vs. 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer: more for your money

The subcompact SUV segment is constantly welcoming new players and renewing itself. For the consumer, this is great, as the choice is varied and composed of attractive and modern suggestions. However, it is important to understand what is being offered to know what is and is not worth the effort.

In the case of the two models we're comparing here, we're talking about interesting products, but if we have to make a decision and be serious, the Volkswagen Taos 2022 is the best deal.

Here's why.

The mechanics

With the Trailblazer, you get two engines, but each has only 3-cylinders (1.2 and 1.3 liter). At best, the capacity is 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. With the Taos 2022, you get a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder across the lineup, this time good for 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. This is by far the most convincing engine. As for the Chevy's 1.2-liter engine, performance is modest at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque.

Fuel economy

You might think that 3-cylinder engines are less frugal at the pump. Wrong. In fact, they work harder, so they don't do any better. With Chevrolet's 1.3-litre engine, highway ratings are 7.2 and 7.8 L/100 km, depending on whether you get a front- or all-wheel drive model. With the Volkswagen Taos, the averages are 6.6 and 7.2 L/100 km respectively.

More power, more flexibility and lower fuel consumption.

Space

And that's not all. When we look at the cargo space, we discover that the Taos 2022 is more spacious. Behind the second row of seats, the advantage is 790 liters versus 716. Behind the first row, it's more pronounced; 1,866 liters (1,705 liters with all-wheel drive) versus 1,540 liters for the Trailblazer.

The transmission

To take advantage of a traditional transmission, you have to opt for the 1.3-liter engine with the Trailblazer. Right off the bat, you get an eight-speed transmission from Volkswagen, which is a model of efficiency. Otherwise, with the 1.2-litre unit from Chevrolet, you get a continuously variable transmission. That doesn't really add up to much in the way of driving experience.

As you can see, a Volkswagen is a better deal than a Chevrolet Trailblazer. Come visit us to discover the model and take it for a test drive.
